DS Al Coda not working?

Ive put in place the 'DS Al Coda', 'segno', 'to coda' and the coda itself (symbol), I have my repeats turned on but it does not go back to the coda once it reaches 'to coda', it just continues to play and ignore the symbol. Im sure this is a mistake on my part but help would be amazing !
