Help with selecting notes

• Sep 17, 2022 - 21:34

Often when selecting a notehead (or a number on the guitar tab staff) instead of being able to drag it to a new pitch (or a new string in the case of tablature) or change the rhythmic value of the note I can only bump the note's placement up or down a bit on the staff. It often takes several clicks before it will let me select the notehead in a way that I can modify it. I never used to have this problem so maybe something has changed about the selection process in the latest version of Musescore that I don't understand. I'm totally willing to believe this is my fault but it's costing me a lot of time when preparing music. Any help is appreciated, thanks!

UPDATE: I eventually discovered that this problem was due to my mouse sometimes double-clicking when in fact I single-clicked. Apparently it's a known issue with some of the Microsoft Bluetooth mice. Thanks for the help and suggestions. I did purchase a new mouse but this issue and the advice I received encouraged me to learn to use Musescore more efficiently, so there's that.

Dragging would never be the recommended way of editing - the keyboard shortcuts are far more precise (eg, Up/Ddown for chromatic, with Alt+Shift for diatonic, with Ctrl for octave). But, if you're having trouble just clicking, perhaps you are zoomed out too far, or perhaps you reduced the proximity setting in Edit / Preferences / Canvas.

If you continue to have trouble, please attach your score and describe the issue in more detail - which note you are trying to move etc.

Seems that you end up accidentally double clicking them then. This places the note in a special "Edit Mode" where you can finetune the graphical position of it, without affecting pitch.

Press "Esc" once to get out of Edit Mode and still have the note selected. Then your arrow keys should work again as expected.
