Managing Chord Symbols

• Oct 17, 2022 - 14:52

I have created both Treble and Bass parts of a piano piece in MuseScore for MIDI export to another application. I didn't want the chords generated my MuseScore chord symbols so I just disabled them and created my own. However, although I am very happy with the sound of my own composition, I discovered that if I enabled chord play for the symbols, that some of the parts sounded quite good. So really, I would like to be able to incorporate some of the chord symbols in my MIDI, but not all of it, in my final MIDI export.

This is where my knowledge of MuseScore falls over. If I export the MIDI with the chord symbols set at Play then I find that the chords generated from the symbols are layered on top of those that I have entered in my composition.

When I import this composite into my new application, I am able to select my original composition without the chords, but not the chords on their own.

I was able to create a workaround by creating a new Piano part and just enter the chord symbols with no actual notes, I then deleted the chord symbols from the first part. This process resulted in exactly what I wanted. I was able to add and remove chord symbols on the new part and also import just the new part on its own track in the new application. But the procedure was very time consuming in having to manually insert all the symbols again and delete them from the original part.

My question is this. Is there an easy way to simply duplicate a part. I this case it would avoid me having to enter the symbols again and just have to remove them from the original part.

Any help would be great.

First off, you could try just setting the midi track/channel for those Chord Symbols from the MIxer (even though by default they already do use a different channel afaik).

But if you for some reason do insist on using a separate part and need to transfer existing chord symbols, it should be as simply as copy/cut & paste:
1. Click on the first Chord Symbol
2. Shift+click on the last (alternatively, right-click and choose "Select all similar elements in staff")
3. Ctrl/Cmd+X (Edit > Cut)
4. Click on the start position of the target staff
5. Ctrl/Cmd+V (Edit > Paste)
