Can I make lyrics font size part of a style so that I don't have to change it all the time?
I tried to make a new style since I want my music to print on a half page size.

It by default is part of the style. But if you're loading a style file, not all texts automatically update (due to a bug). You could try "Format > Reset Text Style overrides" for this.
Use the menu path Format > Style... > Text Styles > Lyrics Odd Lines + Lyrics Even Lines, where you can set the Font and Font Size.
If you want to save the style (to apply it to other scores), use Format > Save Style... to save a stylesheet with *.mss suffix.
