First thing is to read the relevant handbook pages to understand the difference.

Next would be to attach your score and specifically mention what measure(s) and which ties and/or slurs to listen to so that someone here can verify that a problem exists.

Normally you don't hear a difference when using slurs except of some instruments (probably depending on the used sound font). A flute e.g. gives a little difference.
But ties do work as expected. You are aware, that slurs an ties have a different shortcut? Slurs with 's' and ties with '+'.
If you use a slur where a tie should be, you won't be happy - even if they look identical.
Here is an example with the flute in low tempo:
