Midi keyboard recognized for Step Time input, but not Real Time Automatic input

Hello,
If anyone can help me with this problem I'd be greatly appreciative.

I have a Yamaha P-80 keyboard connected to my Macbook pro (Monterey 12.6 in case that matters) via a midi to USB connector. I am listening via cabled headphones connected to the computer's 1/8" jack. Musescore version 3.6.2.548020600.

Steps I took
- connect the P-80 to my macbook
-turn on P-80
-open Musescore
-select Step Time, select measure, "N", click on a measure to add a note.

Result: I can add notes and I can hear the notes I'm playing through my headphones. Success!

Next steps I took:
-select Real Time (automatic)
-select a measure
-click N ( if needed)
-play a note on my piano

Expected result: I hear the note and the note is placed on my score
Actual result: I don't hear a sound. No note is placed on the score. :(

However, if I then select View>Piano Keyboard, and click notes on the keyboard then I hear a note and it's placed on the score for the duration of clicks I hold it. This is what I expected from Real Time Automatic input.

It seems that my midi keyboard is recognized correctly for Step Time input, but not for Real Time Automatic.

I tried quitting Musescore and trying again. If I toggle back and forth between input modes it continues to work for Step Time and continues to not work for Real Time Automatic. This suggests to me that it's a problem beyond Musescore just being able to initiate the connection with my midi keyboard.

Did you watch the video linked at the end of the handbook page on note input modes, to see a demo of how this works? I haven't done this in a long time, but I thought recall you need to actually start the metronome.
