Jazz?

• Dec 6, 2022 - 05:45

Hello, all on the MuseScore Team.

Let me start off by saying THANK YOU for the amazing work you've all put into MS4! I've been a long-time fan of this program and have always believed its unmatched potential in Music Education, Creation, Accessibility, etc.

Quick question regarding MuseSounds:
Is there any plan to add Jazz oriented sounds? (Mainly for Horns, Drums, and acoustic Bass) MuseSounds as it stands is fantastic, but it is overwhelmingly geared toward symphonic writing, leaving little room for other styles.

Jazz (as well as other genres) makes up a large portion of the content creation on this platform. So it'd be really neat to see if there's any plan for this, or in general to expand the library of sounds in MuseSounds. (Maybe even a roadmap?)

Cheers,
Dionne

Hi!
I wanted to write this same exact post!
So, I just comment it.
Yes, the new MuseScore is incredibly gorgeous! Thanks a lot to all the contributors!
As a jazz composer and arranger, I was waiting for this update for two main improvements that are essentials for my use of the software:
1) A repeat sign for more than one bar.
2) Better horn sounds, especially the alto sax which has some intonation issues in the version 3 (I put a soprano sax sound to the alto sax part to preserve harmony).
Hurra! It's done for the first point, but, my tests for the second where disappointing. The rendering of long and sweet chords is beautiful but the sound of a section or a solist, in swing style (like bebop), where you need sharp articulations, is really inaccurate, and the more "robotic" rendering of the ancient soundfount works better.
I really think that I'm not the only one to have some requests on this topic...
Best regards!
Aina

Since Musescore 4 I find I open it up more often than Finale, which I have used since 1998. I love the Muse Sounds for classical type ensembles (concert band, orchestra, etc) but the Muse Sounds are horrible for big band horns, so I tend to use the MS Basic sounds (ugh!) to check harmonies. I would LOVE a Muse Sounds set that is more jazz friendly, even though I don't think this is planned anytime soon. It's not so bad though; even Note Performer is terrible for big band sounds, and have you ever tried to manipulate playback sounds in Finale?! Yikes!! I don't have to faff around in the MS4 mixer... it just works.

Perhaps when the dev team gives users the ability to tone down the reverb on Muse Sounds, then perhaps it will be more friendly for jazz playback.

Minor criticisms aside, Musescore 4 is a game changer. What they have done is absolutely incredible. The dev team say they are by no means done with the development of MS4 and I for one can't wait to see what they come up with!! I seriously think Musescore could be the future of music notation.
