Help with changing and removing slash notation

• Dec 8, 2022 - 05:22

Hi there. I'm coming from Finale so I don't quite understand how slashes work in Musescore.
I followed this article https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/tools
but I see no simple way 'remove' slash notation if I change my mind or change a section later on. It does seem easier to change back from rhythmic notation (using 'toggle rhythmic notation'), but not plain old slashes.
It also seems odd to me that rather than change (or hide) what notation I currently have in a measure, when using slash notation it moves the slashes to another layer and shows whatever notation I had in layer one. I'm not sure why you'd ever want notation this way with both slashes and notation, other than ensemble hits for a drummer but those notes are above the staff right? Finale is fairly easy for this type of notation. Tell me what I'm doing wrong or not understanding here?

thanks

Slash notation in MuseScore are just normal notes that the tool sets to slash head and stemless and fixes to a particular staff line. You delete it like any other notes - select a range, press Delete.

The "fill with slashes" command does indeed keep your existing notation, as this is indeed something you might want (for drums, but also kicks in a lead sheet), other possibilities. If you want to replace the original notes, just delete them before filling with slashes.

The "toggle rhythmic slash notation" does not change the voice (layer is a Finale-specific term; voice is the more general term and is what MuseScore uses). If you have notes in voice 1 selected when you run the command, they get turned into rhythmic slash notation, not change of voice involved. If the notes you select are in voice 3, then those get changed to rhythmic slash notation, and are placed above the staff.

If you continue to have trouble, please attach your score and describe more precisely what you are trying to do, how you are trying to do it, and what goes wrong when you try. Then we can understand and assist better.
