Keyboard Inconsitencies when moving through score

• Dec 18, 2022 - 17:12

Hey all,

I don't get it, why we can move through single notes of the score using left and right arrow, but when moving down we need alt up/down arrow because up/down arrow changes the pitch of the note. I don't find that logical at all, but rather confusing.

Why not use the arrow keys to navigate, and add alt, cmd, shift in whatever combination to alter the duration or pitch of a note? While I do prefer Musescore over Dorico, I struggle with the selection of key commands for this.

That'd make much more sense, don't you think?

Cheers,
Fynn

I didn't know about the Alt+arrow down command to move the highlight down a staff. In Sibelius, arrows work the same as MS except that ALT+ down arrow does nothing. I only use the arrows to change octaves. Sometimes to change pitch.

I think part of the reasoning here is to have the arrow keys without modifier tailor to the most common usage scenario of proofing a staff/voice and adjusting pitch for it.
Moving up/down through the score is likely a lot less frequent action in comparison for most users.

You are of course free to swap the up/down behavior via Edit → Preferences → Shortcuts
