Problem with Shortcuts to MuseScore 4 files

• Dec 18, 2022 - 20:56

I installed MuseScore 4 today and I really like what I see! However, I believe I have discovered a minor issue: I chose a lead sheet that I had created with MuseScore 3.6, and I did some editing with version 4. I saved my work, and when I tried to open the lead sheet by clicking on its Windows filename icon (or its shortcut icon) I got an error message telling me that the file was created with a version later than MuseScore 3.6, and the file doesn't open. (The Windows icon is pointing to program version 3.6 rather than 4.0.)

A workaround for this issue is to right-click on the filename icon or shortcut icon and choose "Open With, Choose another app, MuseScore 4." Since many Windows users have no idea how to change the windows filename extension association, instructions from the community would probably be helpful.

I'm hesitant to delete MuseScore 3.6 from my computer until I become more comfortable with 4.0, and I don't what to change the filename icon's association just yet. Does anyone have a better way to handle this issue?

As far as Windows is concerned, 3.x and 4.x use the same file type, so only one of them can be associated with it.
For me, I've updated the association to MS4, but have not removed 3.6.2 from my machine (and likely won't for a couple of years).

Thanks for the quick response. It wasn't hard to fix the file association, but it took me a few minutes to figure out what was going on. There are so many significant (and welcome) changes in version 4 that I expect the learning curve to be pretty steep. It should be worth the effort! Like you, I plan to leave version 3.6 on my computer until I'm comfortable with the changes.
