Deleting reference to VST

• Dec 22, 2022 - 04:54

Apologies in advance for my lack of vocabulary to describe my issue:

MuseScore 4 scans my MacBook to populate the Mixer's Sound dropdown menu. I had a time-limited instance of IK Multimedia's SampleTank 3 which has now been deleted. However, each time I pop open the Mixer's Sound drop down, SampleTank 3 shows up under VST/IK Multimedia, and the file folder "SampleTank 3" is created again, even when the option is not selected. Somehow, MuseScore 4 has retained a reference to this folder and appears to create it if it is not there.

However, there must be remnants of SampleTank 3 remaining somewhere because when I do click on the dropdown selection, SampleTank 3 does pop up. It declares itself expired and when I close it, Musescore 4 starts to hiss white noise. Shortly thereafter, it crashes with a core dump report.

I have also posted a question to IKMultimedia on how to purge all vestiges of SampleTank 3 as well.

Perhaps this is just an instance of a general case of Musescore 4 not forgetting a VST3 plugin even when it was later uninstalled. I have a similar problem with a program(Vital Audio) that I deleted and isn't anymore present in the VST3 folder but nevertheless still appears in the dropdown menu of the Sound button.

You are more than probably right. I have received a reply from IK Multimedia, and have successfully purged all vestiges of their SampleTank 3 product, libraries, sound samples, etc. I've also deleted MuseScore 4, rebooted, and reinstalled it. Starting up a new mscz, SampleTank3 still shows up in Mixer/Sound/VST/IK Multimedia, even though it no longer exists. When I select it, it now comes up with a blank window. When I close it, SampleTank3 shows up as the selected Sound. Shortly thereafter, it crashes.

File folder locations, which I had changed, are preserved through the deletion and reinstallation of MuseScore 4, so, somewhere, MuseScore 4 has kept this information, and so, probably also has a list of VSTi files it has found which is not deleted or overwritten during reinstallation. I wish I knew where it was so I can purge it and restart with a clean slate.

On Windows I've located %LOCALAPPDATA%\MuseScore\MuseScore4\vst which seems to hold a json metadata file for each vst it found. Try removing the relevant json file from there and if that helps.

Perhaps we can then create an issue for MuseScore to clean up such a file if it no longer can find the file set in the "path" inside the json.

I found the solution. After deleting all of SampleTank 3, including those files in the Library/Application Support/IK Multimedia and Library/Audio/Plug ins/Components/VST/VST3 as well as finding and deleting the relevant contents.db file, I went into the menu bar and did a help/factory reset. Did the trick.
