slurs deactivate staccatos in playback?
so I just found out that if you put in a slur, even just leading UP to a note with a staccato, it gets rid of it and plays the full duration of the note. is there any way around this?

Staccato with a slur should not be played as staccato.
Usually this means portato (not legato i.e. the full duration of the note but also not staccato).

but what i'm saying is, the slur doesn't occur over the staccato, it just leads up to it
it's supposed to be a portato run leading up to a single staccato note
I just tried this with a string section. The staccato worked for me. Post part of a score that does this for you.

mine is the wind section - flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon - all played tenuto when a slur leads up to it. I tried to take a screen recording but I guess the comments don't allow video files
You could create a score of just one page or just one instrument. Then post the mscz.
