MuseScore 4 keeps freezing/crashing

• Jan 14, 2023 - 23:19

Every time I try to create a new score in MuseScore 4, the window freezes and I have to shut it down with Task Manager. I have tried reinstalling it, but this issue remains. What's going on here?

I tried turning off Controlled folder access. Didn't work
Select Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Security > Virus & threat protection. Under Virus & threat protection settings, select Manage settings. Under Controlled folder access, select Manage Controlled folder access. Switch the Controlled folder access setting to On or Off.

Ok - I double checked - Controlled Folder access it wasn't turned off. I made sure now it's turned off and now MuseScore will open a new file!!

There appears to be a problem with how MuseScore 4 interacts with controlled folder access. Doesn't seem ideal to turn it off, but I'm no expert.

Okay, I spoke too soon. When I try to "Save as..." my score - MuseScore 4 freezes again. Can only kill with Task Manager. When I restart it recognizes my session was unexpected closed and properly opens. But if I try to save it freezes. Bummer...

I tried adding MuseScore4.exe (and crashpad_handler.exe) to "Allowed app through Controlled folder access" but that didn't work either.

I just had the same problem on one of my other laptops (MS Surface Go 3) after opening a Musescore3 score and couldn't resolve the issue. I then proceeded to download Musescore 4 on my grandson's MS Surface Go 3. Everything was working fine - UNTIL I made some changes to a score I was working on then went to "X-out" of the program before saving my changes, and that's when it froze AGAIN. I waited quite a bit to see if something would happen. Nope. The computer kept "dinging" me when I tried to open the recent score and also when I tried to create a new score. "Ding-ding-ding." I had to use the Task Manager to end Musescore 4. When I tried opening it again, the program did open, but it was still frozen/dinging. I then rebooted the computer, but when I opened Musescore 4 again, same problem. And since uninstalling and reinstalling Musescore 4 didn't work on the first laptop, I didn't try that procedure on the second laptop, assuming it probably wouldn't work. HELP! (I've attached the score I was working on). Note: Musescore did do an autosave, but that file is a no-go as well since it doesn't save it with a Musescore extension.

This file opens fine for me.
As for the Surface Go. Take a look at the specs required for MS4. It won't work at all right out of the box on just any computer. Un-install and re-install is a waste of time. You need an 8 core CPU, 16 gigs of ram (or more) and an SSD.
The good news is that I have MS4 working on my Surface Go. But to do so I had to make several system adjustments. Find them here: https://musescore.org/en/node/339915
Every one is important.

Thanks for the input, BUT Musescore 4 installed with no problem and the program was working just fine a few hours ago when I created the attached score, no problems. The problem started when I tried to exit the score after making changes but forgetting to save those changes. To me that implies a problem with Musescore and not my computer. Or am I missing something? Thanks.

UPDATE: Okay, I went through the procedure that eisfeldt performed above. I turned the Controlled Folder on, but that didn't solve the freezing problem. I then decided to reinstall Musescore 4 WITHOUT uninstalling first, but I hit a brick wall because Windows said that my computer didn't have permission to make changes. So, I went back and changed the Controlled Folder to OFF. Then I went back and did the reninstall of Musescore 4 again. It did it's magic via the Musescore HUB - then, wallah - Musescore 4 DID open just fine! Therefore I'm going to try doing the reinstall on my other Go computer to see if that works.

By the way, I checked out your link and that seems to apply to audio issues (which I do have) in Musescore 4 for my Go computers. Therefore, I am going to make the necessary system changes in the the hope that solves my audio issues. Thanks for that input!

I had this issue on my MacBook Air after updating to Musescore 4, and while this might be a fluke, the issue resolved when I deselected Mixer in the View Menu. I haven't had the problem since, and have worked on a few different scores, including the original one that froze up.
