Until recently I could export an mscz file as either a pdf or an MP3. NOw I have no choice but a pdf.
How can I make an mpr sound file?

What version of MuseScore on what Operating System?
As far as I can tell this still is supposed to work on all versions and OSes, except maybe some Linux distros?

I do not know which version it is but I have had it since 2014.
I do not have Linux.
The operating system is Windows 10.

But a version from 2014 is very outdated (must be 1.3, as 2.0 got released March 23, 2015, we're a 4.0.1 meanwhile) and back in the day MP3 export might indeed not have been part of the package, due to the MP3 alorithm still being under copyright.
Inded back in the day (any version prior to MuseScore 2.2) you had to download and install lame_enc.dll

The PDF you shared in https://musescore.org/en/node/342066 stems from MuseScore 3.6.2 though
