Rotate symbols

• Feb 20, 2023 - 02:35

I brought this up in the Facebook group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/musescore/posts/9562404723785760/), but I think it would be really helpful to be able to rotate symbols inserted from the master palette. I personally need this for an incipit where I need a "white mensural minima" with a downward stem. Any suggestions before I create a feature request?

Ideally, I'd like to see better support for incipits or mensural notation where one wouldn't need to use symbols, but that's a separate issue.

In MS3 you can use the camera icon to create a PNG of the existing symbol with a transparent background, and then rotate it in a graphics program. Once you have used it in your score you can save it to a custom palette for future use.

FWIW, I think SMuFL should simply support that symbol directly. They have up & down stem versions of all the standard notation notes, as well as flipped versions of the articulations etc. I assume that is so that programs working with SMuFL fonts don't need to have special rotation capabilities (eg, most word processors don't). I recommend requesting this to the SMuFL folks directly (smufl.org).

But sure, rotation for symbols within MsueScore would be nice too - it just shouldn't be necessary. Feel free to request it on GitHub, though.
