Roman Numeral analysis offset does not function

• Mar 27, 2023 - 07:42

In Style > Text Styles > Roman Numeral analysis, changing the X or Y offset does nothing. Quite annoying; all Roman Numerals need to be repositioned by hand, individually. I need them to be over the chord symbols structurally, but at the moment there is no way to set this as default.

RNA is normally below the staff, so the offset will be there. If you want them above the staff, you need to set the position to above first. Since chord symbols and RNA are the same element type internally, they get placed in the order they were added. So which you add first gets to be closer to the staff by default. Enter all the chord symbols first followed by RNA, and the RNA will be above by default. You definitely shouldn't need to resort to positioning things manually.

Thank you. I was under the impression that in MS3 changing the offset under Style updated the layout immediately and structurally, but now I know I need to set the offset beforehand. And just to understand you correctly, when you say "Enter all the chord symbols first followed by RNA, and the RNA will be above by default", this is AFTER I have set the offset to the above position, right?
Thanks in advance.

Changing the offset does affect the score immediately, but as I said, there are two different positions (above and below staff) and thus two different offsets to manage. And also, the offset is only a starting place for determine the final location - autoplace may increase this to avoid collisions. So if in your score autoplace was already doing this, then a small change to offset won’t be noticed, as autoplace will be increasing it anyhow.

Whether you change the style offset before or after entering a symbol is irrelevant. As long as you haven’t manually override the location of the symbol, style change will be applied either way. Maybe the fact that you had manually adjusted some symbols is what prevented the style change from taking effect for those symbols?

As far as I know, nothing about this algorithm has changed between MU3 and MU4.
