Saved Score Missing

• May 28, 2023 - 21:51

I was working on a score and was saving regularly, and had to force quit the application at one point (almost directly after a save) due to a crash, normally when this happens I can simply open the application and restore the session, however this time a popup said that the project was unopenable. I restarted my computer and tried again, opened the file and restored the session, and got a much older version of the project. Seeing as I saved multiple times since the version of the project I am now stuck with, are any of those saves stored anywhere on my system?

Unless you saved to different filenames, no, they overwrite each other like any other file. But your OS may well save the different versions - OneDrive on Windows does this automatically, for instance. Also, did you try clicking "open anyway" when you got the message about the error on the original file? There is also a backup file MuseScore makes automatically. Turn on display of hidden files and look in the .mscbackup folder for that.

I don't see how it could have overwritten though, because I didn't save over the saves I made on purpose. It just opened on an older autosaved version as if I hadn't made saves. As for the error message, I would have normally pressed "open anyway" on a usual file corruption notice, but this one was different and said that the file was "unopenable" and I was given the options to close the app or to be redirected to the forum. Also, where can I find the mscbackup folder?

It is called ".mscbackup" (dot at the beginning) and is usually hidden. It depends on your operating system how you can make it visible. In Windows Explorer you can open the options menu and select "View". There are a number of checkboxes, one of which is called "Show hidden files, folders and drives" (I'm using a German installation, so the exact wording may be a little different).
This folder is located in the same folder as your score.
Perhaps your 'unopenable' file can be fixed, so please attach it.

Every time you press "save", it overwrites the existing file. That's true of every program ever - it's how computers work. Only if you use "save as" or "save a copy" are separate versions made. And if you used that, you'd have needed to give the file a new name. So it's the new name you'd be searching for now.

It wouldn't hurt to attach the "unopenable" file. If there was a crash while writing the file it may indeed be unrepairable, but there is a chance it might be salvageable.

I know that the file overwrites each time I manually save, but my point is that I never saved over the version of the file I'm looking for. I opened the file and got an older version of the file (unsure as to whether or not its an old manual save or an old autosave) It's as if the saves I made throughout my work never happened.
As for the unopenable error, it's all the same file. I restarted my computer and opened the file that had previously been unopenable and got this older version. I am beginning to think it may have been a crash in my external drive, which would explain the saves I made not going through in the first place and the file being unopenable.

Needless to say, what you're describing shouldn't happen. If you enter a filename from a specific folder that is the exact file that should be opened - computers don't have some magic way of substituting older versions. The only logical explanation is that the file you opened was not the file you thought it was. But without a way to go back in time and look over your shoulder as this happened, it's impossible to say more.
