My Music Files

• Jul 7, 2023 - 04:32

Hello, I recently installed the latest version MuseScore 4 and as such moved my old files onto the new platform.
I then saved one of my older MuseScore 3 files onto 4. Unfortunately MDL is not compatible with MS4 but I wanted to continue using it in my piece so I tried to put the file back on MS3. The score showed up blank on MS3 because It was now an MS4 file. MS3 then auto saved my score, which is now blank, so when I try and put it back on MS4 it shows up as blank there too. Is there a way to recover my music? This was a huge project and it doesn't seem like i'm able to retrieve it, please help.

For the future: please keep scores in MS3 format rigorously separated from files in the newer MS4 format. Then you will always have a backup available (the old-format MS3 score).

On this occasion you'll have to try and find a backup file, because the score you posted contains only this skeleton definition - it is in effect empty:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<museScore version="3.02">
  <programVersion>3.6.2</programVersion>
  <programRevision>3224f34</programRevision>
  <Score>
    <LayerTag id="0" tag="default"></LayerTag>
    <currentLayer>0</currentLayer>
    <Division>480</Division>
    <Style>
      <Spatium>1.74978</Spatium>
      </Style>
    <showInvisible>1</showInvisible>
    <showUnprintable>1</showUnprintable>
    <showFrames>1</showFrames>
    <showMargins>0</showMargins>
    <metaTag name="arranger"></metaTag>
    <metaTag name="composer"></metaTag>
    <metaTag name="copyright"></metaTag>
    <metaTag name="creationDate">2023-07-06</metaTag>
    <metaTag name="lyricist"></metaTag>
    <metaTag name="movementNumber"></metaTag>
    <metaTag name="movementTitle"></metaTag>
    <metaTag name="mscVersion">3.02</metaTag>
    <metaTag name="platform">Microsoft Windows</metaTag>
    <metaTag name="poet"></metaTag>
    <metaTag name="source"></metaTag>
    <metaTag name="translator"></metaTag>
    <metaTag name="workNumber"></metaTag>
    <metaTag name="workTitle"></metaTag>
    </Score>
  </museScore>

I am quite sure, MuS 3 does not autosave your score. Your saved it!

There may be a copy in the hidden folder ".mscbackup" just in your score's folder.
Search in the web for your operating system how to make hidden files and folders visible.

As said: please keep scores in MS3 format rigorously separated from files in the newer MS4 format.
Use your file explorer to copy MuS3 files to the score's folder of MuS4 and open them from the new location in MuS4.
