Scores created by 4.1 not appearing in Windows Explorer and MIDI/MP3 output corruption

• Jul 15, 2023 - 00:22

This only started happening since upgrading to 4.1 a couple of days ago.

If I save a score to a directory, and then try and view the score in the directory with Windows Explorer, I cannot see the score in the file listing. However, MuseScore will still find the score when I "Open Recent". It just isn't shown in Windows Explorer. In fact, existing scores, if opened, and saved, disappear in Windows Explorer as well.

Second, if you export a score to MIDI, and then try and import this MIDI into a DAW, the DAW does not accept the MIDI as valid input.

Third, if you directly output MP3 from 4.1 and try and play that MP3, Windows gives a "class not registered" error.

FACTS
* This did NOT happen in 4.0.2
* Windows 11
* No file permissions were changed between 4.0.2 and the upgrade to 4.1.
* Hidden files are shown in all directory listings.
* OneDrive has been disabled so that this isn't a sync error.

I wanted to test whether this was a MuseScore problem in general. I still have 3.6.2 on my machine, so I took a score and used the same file location that failed for 4.1. I:
- saved a score
- exported MIDI file
- exported MP3
The score showed up in that location and was displayed in Windows Explorer.
The MIDI showed up in that location and could be imported successfully into a DAW.
The MP3 played fine in Media player.

It's almost as if 4.1 is adding some sort of weird invisible file extension to its output!?

I can post a score, but it honestly does not matter. I've tested this by creating a brand new score, as well as existing scores. They all exhibit the same behavior... not showing up in Windows Explorer, bad MIDI, bad MP3. In any case, since I cannot find any of these scores in Windows Explorer, I cannot post here. If I find a way to get one, I'll post it.

UPDATE: Midi output works if you export it to the "Downloads" folder, but that's the only one it seems to work in. I wonder if it is a problem with the Documents folder?

Yes, they are all the default...
C:/Users/kiefe/OneDrive/Documents/MuseScore4/Scores.

VST3 folder here is blank, if that makes any difference.

As I said, if I directly save things to the Downloads directory, it is fine.
C:\Users\kiefe\Downloads

Is this a OneDrive issue? As I said, I turned off OneDrive sync, but I'll turn it back on again and see if that does anything

Okay, so open a "recent" score and then use menu item: File > Project properties and look for the 'File path' (near the bottom of the dialog). Click on the folder icon to the right. The folder containing that score should open in Explorer. Is it accessible?

Okay, so under Edit > Preferences > Folders instead of:
C:/Users/kiefe/OneDrive/Documents/MuseScore4/Scores
use:
C:/Users/kiefe/Documents/MuseScore4/Scores
