MIDI note entry problems

I'm using MuseScore 4 and have experienced problems when entering notes via a MIDI controller. I can enter a few notes in step input mode but then it will stop responding to the notes or advancing to the next beat. I have tried 5 different midi controllers and it does it with all of them. I'm on a Mac running 13.4.1.
Ideas?

FWIW I just updated to 4.1.1 this morning and it is still doing it. I’ve been using MuseScore for several years now so that I can assist my students (I’m a college professor) and I’ve used it daily for creating instructional theory, ear-training, and composition materials, as well as making scores and parts. I can say that I’ve never had anything remotely like the trouble I’m having now. What once took seconds is now taking minutes because I have to enter notes with the keyboard rather than via MIDI. I may have to revert to MuseScore3 soon as the semester is quickly approaching and I cannot afford to spend the kind of time I’m spending now. I used Finale and Sibelius for years but switched to MuseScore because of the affordability for my students. Anyway, the note entry issue is still happening. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
