slurs between double stops (violin)

• Aug 5, 2023 - 19:55

I score fiddle tunes. Sometimes I want to write consecutive double stops (two notes bowed simultaneously) linked by a slur - in fact two slurs - between the two notes in the consecutive harmonies. It seems that Musecore does not allow this. Am I mistaken, or is there a workaround?

I'm a fiddler. Sounds like you asking about true double stops (each note is fingered) rather than phrases with drones (lots of ringing open strings.)

And I'm deducing that you're mainly trying to impact the notation by including a second set of slurs, so you'll have independent slurs on the lower and the upper notes of the harmony. If so, I think you can accomplish that only by putting the notes in separate voices, which is actually the best approach for writing droned phrases as well.

In the attached image I wrote a double stop phrase with the lower notes in voice 2 and the upper in voice 1. Then slurred them independently.

Thank you: firstly for understanding exactly what I was trying to say and, secondly for your explanation. Using voices is new to me. I just tried it and found that I could then use F6, select "slurs" and drag a copy of the slur to the second pair of notes using "edit element". Is this the process you are using? I notice that in the example you have provided there are sets of numbers over the notes. What do they signify? In my experiment with the process symbols like rests were automatically generated. I'd quite like to get rid of them.
Thanks again for your help.

Glad my comments were helpful.

Working with voices takes some practice.

The pairs of numbers were just logical left hand violin fingerings, so not necessary to include.

I added slurs simply by clicking a note and pressing s. If you want to extend the slur to more notes press shift-rightArrow. Alternately you can select a range of notes (Click the first note, then Shift-click the last note) and press s to slur them together.

Rests appear when a voice is not completely full. You can fill over rests by changing note durations. Or you can select any offensive rests and press v to toggle their visibility, which causes then to display in gray on screen, but they won't print to hard copy, display in PDF, or appear on MuseScore.com. If you don't want to see the gray notes onscreen just uncheck Show>Invisible.

If you you have trouble with the rests attach a score and I'll see what's causing the issue.
