Separate voices in same bar

Actually both voices are separate strings on an acoustic guitar. I want to have one voice with quarter notes and the second with occasional half notes. I know it involves the numbers 1-2-3-4 at the top right, but I'm missing a step somehow because when I try to add the second voice, it cuts the first voice. Don't know where to look in the manual.
