drumset sound without drumset notation

I am writing for a percussion setup based on the standard drumset, but the setup itself is not a drumset, so I'd prefer not to use drumset notation.
I can easily create a n-lines percussion notation, as I plan to use notes across the lines to represent the pieces of my setup. Fine, but:
How can I assign (if possible) to each note a certain sound from the drum kit (for sake of playback)?
