updating from Musecore 3
I currently have MS3 on my laptop. Tried to download 4 from the website, but didn't work. Can I update from my 3 to 4 within the program?

No - you should download it from the Download > Software link at the top of this page. Note that you can have MS3 and MS4 independently on the same computer.
