Small-sized accents / articulations along with small noteheads

• Oct 9, 2023 - 12:14

Hi! I'd like to add small accents to a bunch of notes with small noteheads but the accents are regular-sized when I try to do this. Is there any way to add small-sized accents (or small articulations in general) especially to small noteheads? For comparison, grace notes automatically have small accents and articulations.

The only work-around I've found is to make the note-heads be regular-sized (i.e. uncheck "small notehead") but then switch on "cue size", then manually adjust the stem sizes (since cue-sized, regular notehead notes have skinnier stems than non-cue-sized, small notehead notes) - but was wondering if there's a simpler way to do this.

Thanks!

When you change the size of only the notehead everything else, stems, flags and any associated articulations etc. remain the same size - Musescore does what you ask for and no more. When you specify cue size then everything associated with that note or chord including articulations is reduced in size (as you have found). Also note that you can specify cue size for rests to match cue sized notes.

There should be no difference in the simplicity of the two different methods, the just require ticking different boxes.

Having small noteheads with full sized stems and flags might be useful for things like indicating alternative or optional notes or for harmonics, but in those case it would be normal practice to also have full sized articulations. Do you have a different application that would require small articulations and noteheads with full sized stems and flags? If so, then please explain in more detail what you are doing and why it would be useful and perhaps create a feature request.

Ohhhh I had no idea it was normal practice - currently transcribing Rach 2 for solo piano, was trying to follow the formatting in this orchestra score which had small accents for the small noteheads

With regards to the noteheads my bad I wasn't super clear - I meant that I realised you could shrink notes in 2 different ways (cue size or select small notehead, both of which make the stems and flags small too) but that the cue size option shrunk more than small notehead did. Except that cue size would also shrink articulation with the note whereas small notehead wouldn't and cue size seems to have much larger spacing in between notes so I didn't use it as an alternative. And because their sizes didn't match up I couldn't use mix and match both without further manual adjustment which is a bit of a hassle~
(Also found out you can double shrink notes and make them extraaaa small by selecting both cue size and small notehead.)

Don't really have a specific purpose for the small articulations / accents, was just trying to get it to look in proportion to the small noteheads :D
