Adjusting High DPI setting for sharpest MS image quality (Windows 10/11)

• Nov 10, 2023 - 10:51

Hey everyone,

Has this topic been covered? If not, it seemed worth mentioning.

In Windows 10 and 11, on higher-resolution displays (such as my 3840x2160), scores in MuseScore 4 don't look as sharp as they can by default. To fix this:

  1. In a file manager, open the folder containing your MuseScore executable file, which is usually here:

   C:\Program Files\MuseScore 4\bin\MuseScore4.exe

  1. Right-click the .exe file; then in the pop-up menu that appears, click Properties. The MuseScore4.exe Properties dialog box appears.

  2. On the Compatibility tab, click "Change high DPI settings". The High DPI settings for MuseScore4.exe dialog box appears.

  3. Select the "Override high DPI scaling behavior" checkbox; then, in the "Scaling performed by" drop-down list, select "Application".

  4. Click OK > OK.

In these screenshots, the top image is how music appears by default; the lower image is how it appears with this adjustment:

(I've zoomed in here, but even at normal size, the difference is obvious.)

It'd be great if everyone who downloaded the Windows version of MS could know about this, but I don't know if there's a practical way to do that. If the setting is available programmatically, maybe an option like this would be a good idea, so each user could try it?:

  □ Improve image quality on high-resolution displays (requires restart)

Or perhaps there's a way for the installer to detect high screen resolutions (anything over 1080p, I imagine?—you could test this) and make the setting itself?

The website insisted on enlarging these images, for some reason—but if you zoom out so they're about half-size, as they might appear in real life, you can see what a difference it makes.
