Divisi and a 2 playback
It would be nice if "divisi" when applied to strings slightly dropped the level of each voice to keep the volume consistent, and also if "a 2" when applied to woodwinds and brass either doubled the sound automatically or slightly increased the level. I often find myself having to manually write a second voice in my wind and brass parts that shares a notehead with the main voice, then hide the second voice in order to create an a 2 sound, and this gets very messy and is also hard to edit.

Welcome to the notation software world of notation vs playback. And never the twain shall meet. What you would like to have happen would require different fonts to be used at the times you want.
Think about divisi. Does everyone want the parts to be softer? Not always. Sometime it will be part of a bigger sound. Hence one need for divisi.
Likewise, a 2 doesn't automatically mean double the volume. If you need more volume at that point, why not just add a dynamic and then make it invisible?
