Extra rest

I am working on an SATB piece. It is 4/4. I type in the soprano and alto as the same note showing two stems, one up and one down as the first beat. The next beat is two different notes, and it shows two separate notes with two stems, one up and one down. The third beat is two half notes with one stem up and the other down showing two different voices. This also shows when I hover by the two different colors except for the first unison note. Here is what confuses me. Why do I still have a rest at the end of this giving me 5/4 timing? And why am I unable to erase it? I have tried to move voices around, but the system defaults back.
