Playback of breath marks not pausing

• Dec 22, 2023 - 14:40

In the Bach Chorales I uploaded in MS 4.0, there are breath marks with a pause of 1 second in the properties. It works in the on-line copies as it did when I submitted them, but choosing them from my local files or downloading and playing them in MS 4.2, they don't pause. One example is here:

https://musescore.com/user/31918720/scores/9346195?share=copy_link
or find it attached.

Just open the score and play it. The breath marks should give a 1 second pause. Then Download it into MuseScore 4.2 and play it there. No breath pause. Checking the properties of any of the breath marks should show a playback property of 1 second.

In each case the breath pause is preceded by a firmata. Each firmata is set to give a 1 beat extension (quarter notes 200%, half notes 150%, ...). Which also happens to be the requested duration of the breath pause at 60bpm. Ahaa... I paid closer attention to the duration of the firmatae. The breath marks are extending the firmatae by the duration of the breath pause. i.e. a firmata on a quarter note set to 100% stretch (no stretch) is 2 beats. Set it to 200% and it's 3 beats (with no pause). So I tried leaving the firmata at 100% and making the breath pause longer. That doesn't work. The breath mark just adds 1 second (or 1 beat?) to whatever the duration of the firmata is. I also tried changing the tempo from 60 bpm to 30 bpm, and the breath mark still seems to extend the firmata by 1 second whether it's property is set for 1 second or 2 seconds. Also tried changing the tempo to 120 bpm, and the breath mark still adds 1 second to the stretch of the firmata.

So in summary, I think the behavior is that the breath marks don't stop the sound for a pause (making it hard to breathe), and seem to be hard wired to a duration of 1 second. Oh... I didn't try a breath mark with no firmata.
