Cant open a mscz file and I dont know why: Error=XML_ERROR_EMPTY_DOCUMENT ErrorID=13 (0xd) Line number=0

• Jan 26, 2024 - 01:26

I was working on this score in the morning, I closed Musescore 4 and saved it, left my computer, and came back to find myself unable to open this file, whenever I try to open the file it states:
File "piece.mscz" is corrupted
The error it provided: Error=XML_ERROR_EMPTY_DOCUMENT ErrorID=13 (0xd) Line number=0

Context: I searched for ways to recover autosaves, but I was unable to find these autosaved versions in the folders/locations they were supposed to be in; the .mscbackup folder backup file also prompted the same error. The file was not corrupted before to any extent, my Musescore did not update while I was away, and I was able to open the file normally before I came back to see this error. (Im using Windows 11 if thats useful to know at all)
HOWEVER, my computer blue screens sometimes when I use Musescore or much of anything, so maybe my OS problems are messing stuff up.

I was wondering if there was any method I could use to recover this file to a usable state, I've linked the file below, thanks for taking the time to read this.

Unfortunately I'm not able to open that file in a ZIP editor either; it seems to have been messed up too badly.

Autosave files are deleted if the program closes normally - they are only left around after a crash, to aid in recovery.

Best way to recover previously saved versions on Windows is via OneDrive, unless you disabled that. As I recall, you can get to those options by just right-clicking the file, but if not, just do a web search for more info.
