Adding lyrics to chords w/slashes

I'm doing a rhythm section lead sheet and want to add lyrics, but they're a different rhythm than what the staff style is - the staff might be either chords w/slashes or a specific rhythm, but the rhythm of the lyrics is different. I saw someone suggest putting eighth notes in the measures and then switching the staff style to slashes, but that was problematic. What's the best way to handle this? I assume it's some sort of text box I create?
