Mac spinning beach ball

• Mar 21, 2024 - 17:53

I have a Mac Studio with an M2 Max processor and 64 gb of RAM. So I have plenty of computing power. But when working with orchestral scores, I continually get the dreaded spinning beach ball. It happens randomly, but frequently, every few minutes. I'll be placing some notes and suddenly the screen will freeze. The beach ball appears and stays for about fifteen seconds. Then I'm able to work again until the next freeze. When I save the file as I progress, the same thing happens.

My scores are located on a Thunderbolt 3 external hard drive, and I'm wondering if that might be the issue, as Musescore attempts to write backup files. But this wasn't an issue until Musescore 4.

That works, but I don't want to keep shuttling files back and forth. I think I found a workaround: I originally had Musescore set to autosave every 3 minutes. I changed that to every 15 minutes and that gives me a lot more working time before things hiccup. I could turn off autosave altogether, but I like having the security.
