Unwanted sustain and unwanted notes in Playback

• Jul 8, 2024 - 03:05

Hi. I am writing something pretty simple. In the excerpt I am attaching, there is a piano and a bass. If your playback behaves like on my system, the piano will play a chord in the second measure. It is written as an eighth note followed by a quarter note rest. But the rest is not observed by Playback. The chord continues to ring out.

In the fourth measure, the B13 chord plays on the and-of-2, as expected (although it is being sustained incorrectly). Then, instead of observing the eighth note rest on beat 3, Playback plays a phantom C13. Then it correctly plays the C13 chord on the and-of-3 -- except that it is incorrectly sustained.

Full disclosure, I used to have a guitar instrument playing the chords. I added the piano as an instrument. Then I copied the notes from the guitar staff to the piano's treble staff and moved the lower notes of the chords to the piano's bass staff. Then I deleted the notes from the guitar staff. In that state, I experienced the problems noted above. I have deleted the guitar instrument from the score, but that did not fix anything.

Any ideas for me? Thanks for any help you can give!

I figured out the problem. By default (I believe) the option was turned on to "Play chord symbols". This option was found under the gear (settings) icon on the toolbar at the top of the score. I didn't realize that the chord symbols were anything more than helpful text on the page. But if the option is turned on, Playback will play the notes of the chord symbols. (I have no idea how it would know which voicing of the chord you would want. It probably used the notes on the staff that you put there.) You can click on the chord symbols and move them for better visual spacing, which is great; except that Playback uses the location of the symbol to determine when to play it.

If you go to Format / Style / Chord Symbols / Playback, you can set how chord symbols are played: "Interpretation", "Voicing", and "Duration".

They are turned on by default. If you wish to turn off a single chord symbol, click it to select, then open the Properties tab at upper left and unclick the Play checkbox.

If you want to turn them ALL off, right-click on a chord symbol. Then click Select / Similar from the context menu. This should select all of the chord symbols. Once you have them, again go to the Properties tab and unclick Play.
