Muse Sounds violin 1 notes randomly way too loud

• Aug 20, 2024 - 01:28

I am working on transcribing the Turangalîla Symphonie by Olivier Messiaen, and I have encountered an issue. This started happening suddenly very recently and I am not sure what started it, it has never happened before.

The problem is that some notes in the violin 1 cut out a LOT more than they should. It most oftenly happens with really highnotes. It's always the same places where it happens, but since the context is not really consistent I sadly can't tell how to reproduce it. It happens in both fast and slow passages, different note lenghts and different articulations. Though, one common factor is that the dynamic is always loud, and there's usually a lot of other instruments playing at the same time. Other than that it seems quite random, and there are many places where you would think it should happen but it doesn't.

This has also started happening in the tenth movement which I have completed a while ago, but reopened to clean up a bit. This leads me to believe that the score is not the problem.

Take a listen at rehearsal mark 36 in the fifth movement. Some of the highest violin 1 notes at that part sound extremely loud and shrill for me, especially the high B. This does not happen with the violin 2:s even though they are playing the same notes but in octaves, so I'm guessing it has something to do with the violin 1 soundfont. I'm quite sure it happens with the violas too sometimes but it's harder to hear. A couple of bars after rehearsal mark 9 it can also be heard briefly in the violins 2.

Another example where the bug can be heard for me is right before the fermata in the last bar of the fifth mvt (a huge Db6 chord). Suddenly the violin 1 jumps up a ton in volume before the fermata, which is very hard to miss even when listening in tutti. Then it seems to stop playing completely, instead of finishing the fermata. (Start listening from the bar before the pianissimo, otherwise it doesn't happen)

This, however, does not happen in the last chord of the tenth movement, which is weird since the context is exactly the same - huge crescendo tutti chord with fermata. The difference is that the chord is an F#6 chord. The violin 1:s are even playing the same note as in the last chord in the fifth movement (C#/Db7), but for me no bugs are occuring at that place in mvt. X.

I want to post screen recordings of this to clarify but when I choose the files they won't get uploaded. I'm guessing the format is wrong. I would love to get help with that as well.

Other examples in movement X:
RH 11, 12, 27

Use Violins 2 instead of Violins 1. The numbers do not denote desks, but rather playing styles. And do you have the latest string update?
