4.4 update visually broke all of my Lute scores in Linux

I optimistically updated to 4.4 from 4.3 ( running Fedora40 ) and on loading my scores, they are all visually quite broken now. The normal display for tempo above the staff are broken - showing random letters like a capitalized E with " above it, or an O with " above it, etc, instead of the normal notation ( a line with varying slashes ). It also broke the font used for the lute tablature - there's a variety of styles ( italian, french, modern, etc ) and while it says it is using "French" it's actually just everything is an upper case letter in standard font.

I've checked all my settings and they are correct, unchanged from 4.3, which most of my scores were created in. Unfortunately going to have to downgrade, because this is impossible to use.
