Additional or alternate volumes for libraries

• Nov 28, 2024 - 09:11

Standard MuseScore 4 - with likely associated libraries - now fits well enough on most modern machines.
If, however, 3rd party libraries are taken into account, then libraries may take up a lot of storage space.
The simple, and usual way of mitigating this problem is to use an external drive or SSD, which will generally work fast enough, and make space available in the main storage area.
Over time though, even an external SSD - if not extremely large, can become full.

At present it doesn't seem to be possible to use additional or alternate volumes to solve this issue.
One solution to this would be to put all the existing libraries on to an additional volume with significantly more storage space.

Although this is possible, it may require a very cumbersome and length re-installation process to migrate the libraries to a new storage device. It's not only the libraries, including instrument samples, which have to be copied/moved over, but also in many cases authorisation data to allow the libraries to be used with MuseScore also has to be set up.

Tools to help with this would be very welcome.

Firstly, if more than one external storage drive could be used with MuseScore that could overcome the first problem.
Then if it were then possible to migrate library files from a smaller drive onto one consolidated drive, that would be a great help.

If these features are currently available, please explain them here. The intention is to try to avoid the need for very extended system maintenance and re-installation - which can take days of time which could be better used for making music.
