Creating and Using My Templates

• Jan 14, 2025 - 15:24

I believe I've followed all the steps to create a template from a score style I commonly use. I've checked the folder settings and they look correct, but when I go to File > New > Create from template, I don't see a "My Templates" category. and searching does not find my custom template. My Folder settings are pointing to a folder under my (Windows) user folder, but one of the other posts I've read indicates that the templates should be stored where MuseScore is installed. Which is that correct or shouldn't it matter?

To create a template, take a score with the instruments, their order and all your desired text styles and save it in
..\Documents\Musescore4\Templates. A single measure is enough.

You can probably also save it in the installation folder, but this is not intended in Windows. That's what the above folder is for.

This is exactly what I did first, yet my template that is "physically" in the folder you reference does not show when I go to look for and use it as described in the documentation (New score > Create from template). There is no category for "My Templates" (as documented) and searching for the template's title gives nothing.

You could also create the folder, but with a normal installation and without any changes it should already exist. However, if you do not yet have an mscz file in the folder, it will not be displayed.
So save the template file in the folder in mscz format!

What does it say in "Edit -> Preferences -> Folders"?

Comparing your 2 screenshots, they show....
Folder_paths.png
Do you have one Documents folder located in C > Documents and another Documents folder located in Dan > Documents?
Be sure the file paths to ChangingVoices.mscz (and therefore the Templates folder) are identical.
(I'm assuming that ChangingVoices.mscz is the desired template.)

Thanks for picking this up Jm6stringer. No. Those are the same Documents folders. The one showing my potential template file is simply accessed from a Quick Access link. I'm completely mystified and wondering if I did something wrong during installation. I would think that the My Templates folder would have been created during installation.

Jm6stringer, please look at the two images I've uploaded. The Templates folder in Preferences is shown in the first image. That is the same path in which my potential template is located. This is how I had it set up when I posted this problem. Plainly, it don't work and I can't figure out why. :-(

THANK YOU, Jojo-Schmitz! After I added a File > Project Properties > Work title, the My Templates category and my template name appeared when I went through New > Create from template. The process of using my template worked just as I expected. Perfect.

The only thing that puzzles me is the documentation that you pointed me to. Here is what it says:

Save a score as a custom template

Click File → Save as and save the score file as .mscz format into the template directory Musescore uses. Content of the last added Title text is used as the template name (NOT the content of File → Project Properties → Work Title field; also not the file name as Musescore 3).

The puzzling part is the NOT that I emphasized above. Going back to the beginning of that sentence, I'm unclear about what "Title text" is or means. Is that the title that I originally put on the file I used to make the template? It seems so because the name of the template in My Templates category is not the Operating System file name or the Project Properties > Work title I just added. 'Tis a puzzlement, but I learned something. Thanks, again.

As far as I know, the only relevant name is the file name *.mscz (e.g. NAME.MSCZ). This gives you a template called NAME. All other names in the project properties or title screen are irrelevant.

Create a score with all instruments, all text formats and the correct order of the instruments and save it under 'NAME.MSCZ' in the template folder with 'Save As'. By the way, one measure is enough, but you can take any mscz file if it suits your needs. And you can also copy it into the template folder without using Musescore.

Then choose the template 'NAME' for your next new scores and you will get the set setup.

An entry in Project properties for Lyrisist certainly doesn't harm, but isn't usefull either.

In Mu4 you used to need to have a Title in the Title frame of the template for it to show in the list of templates, seems that has been fixed meanwhile, it now takes the filename withou the .mscz. Unfortunately the handbook is still read-only, pending its move to GitBook

The folder settings all point to ../Documents/Musescore4/Templates (and all others
like /Scores, /Styles, /Plugins and /Soundfonts).
This is the default value if you have not modified it.
