Musescore Studio 4.5 causes Musescore Android App to crash

• Mar 21, 2025 - 18:21

I edited a Musescore Studio score in 4.5 which was originally created in 4.4. When I attempted to open the score in the Musescore Android App, the app crashed and closed. I udpated the app to the current version on Google Play, but the problem continues. I then created a new score in Musescore Studio 4.5 to see if the problem was related to revising an old 4.4 score, but the app crashed when attempting to open the new score as well.

True enough; but given that we don't know whether there is a bug embedded in scores created (or merely opened and saved) in Musescore Studio 4.5 that causes the Android App to crash, or if the Android App needs to be updated to be able to read and display scores created in Musescore Studio 4.5, I thought it advisable to warn others that they will not currently be able to open 4.5 scores in the app. I use Musescore Studio to create my compositions but use my Android tablets to play the scores at my piano and can no longer do so. The app otherwise functions normally with scores created in previous Musescore Studio versions.

The issue didn't exist before Musescore Studio 4.5, so it has something to do with a change to the software. Could be as dumb as the app not liking a version number hidden in some metadata.

I assume that you are correct that it would be up to musescore.com to support and fix this (and I'll report it there, if I can figure out how), but it doesn't seem impossible that someone over here might have a clue as to what is causing the issue, since it is definitely related to a change in the new version.

For now, if people want their scores to work on the Android App, I recommend uninstalling 4.5 and reinstalling 4.4. Then you can download your scores from the musescore.com website (I went with MusicXML files, but other formats may also work), open them in Musescore Studio 4.4, and re-export/upload to musescore.com.
