note entry vs use of keyboard

I have just downloaded MuseScore Studio. I have a conventional keyboard attached to the computer, which I've used successfully with MS versions 2, 3, and 4. Since the download, when I log into Studio, choose a score that I've written, and go to play the notes as a trial before entering, the "note" pen lights, and what I play appears on the score. Is there a way to suppress this automatic connection to note entry so that I may play notes first, then change to note entry by engaging that button, and proceed to enter to the score?

Edit -> Preferences -> Note Input -> uncheck "When pressing a key, begin note input..." checkbox.

Thank you. 1/2 solved. Hitting the keyboard key no longer automatically lights up the input symbol. But I remain unable to play the keyboard and produce a sound. Thoughts?
