The nightly build c22e88b shows wrong symbols for the beat signs (ony empty squares on my box; should be the "C" sign))

Have you tried a factory reset?
Have you installed some musescore fonts somewhere?
What OS, I think you're using Linux, right? If so this might be a know issue with a wrongly packaged MuseScore 1.x, which installes the fonts rather than using the builtin ones.
