Decrease system spacing

• Jul 2, 2025 - 19:04

I have three systems on the first page, just the way I want it. But I have too much white space between them. I've played with the various staff spacers, but they increase the staff spacing, which I don't want. I tried increasing the space at the bottom, but that affects all pages. I tried adding a footer, but I couldn't do that, either.

I think (always open for better suggestions) that a vertical frame at the bottom of the page would do it. But I can't get one to appear there. How to do?

I would also like to move the title (using system text) on page 2 up, but when I do that, all of the page moves down.

Am I correct in thinking that frames and spacers are the way to go with tweaking the layout, rather than futzing with the numbers?

Changing the space between systems (in Format / Style/Page) doesn't work, simply because you have lyrics below (by default), but also above the staff. Example on the second page.

The program does what it was designed to do: avoid collisions. That's what it does. These are specifics in your scores (I've already seen this in another) that you need to be aware of.
To reduce the space between systems on the first page, you can e.g. adjust the Height and Gap below of the title frame (in Properties). The result is as follows: 2Down By the Old Mill Stream.mscz

However, you have a little leeway by using the Staff spacer fixed down symbol. But you have to do it for each system... :( - image below.

" How can I view the additional space allotted for lyrics above and below the staff"
In other words? Would you like to bring the lyrics closer to the staves?

I would decrease Format / Page / Max System Distance. The default is 32; try around half that, or less. (@Cadiz1 :: Yes it does so work.)

If you want to use a frame, add a Vertical Frame to the first measure on the following page. Then select the frame and add the Page Break (from the Layout palette) to it. You may have to (or want to) adjust the Height of the Vertical Frame in its Properties.

[A few moments later*] Oh, BTW, that arrangement sounds like the one from the Barber Pole Cat. If that's what you're doing, I digitized the whole thing a few years ago. If you'd like it, let me know.

I did the Polecats 15 years ago, when I was learning Finale. Since then, I’ve been a volunteer copyist for BHS, and have worked on hundreds (if not a thousand and more) official charts.

I’m entering the Polecats again, in MSS, just to improve my chops. That’s why I’ve been pestering you all with alignment and spacing questions. I want my MSS charts to match the Finale charts, which have been our standard for years. And since I’m now teaching MSS rather than Finale at our Harmony College Northwest weekend, I need to stay one chapter ahead of the class!
