Shortcuts in MuseScore Studio 4.5.x

• Sep 4, 2025 - 17:56

Hi Muse Folks,
how can I get a semicolon as a separator for editing shortcuts with two different key assignments, just like many default shortcuts have so?
Whatever I try only replaces the first entry.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanxx

Only by manually editing the shortcuts.xml, as the devs (actually tantacrul IIRC) in their unlimited wisdom removed that feature from the UI

Thank you a lot for your reply. That's what I was afraid of.

Similarly, my external numpad now only works like the one on a normal keyboard.
Previously, I was able to freely assign shortcuts to it for my left hand too. Now it is no longer recognized as a separate device—although I can't say for sure whether that's due to MacOS 15 or MuseScore.

Well, I would like to see the function as it was in MS 3 on MacOS High Sierra, where I could assign various keys on the NumPad differently and freely with any shortcut.

I'm not afraid of manual editing—not that I know much about it.

But since ATARI ST and moving on to Cubase, Notator, Logic, Finale, Sibelius... there have been quite a few. But now I'm running out of time to quickly and casually jot down a few things. ;-)
I've had an MS Pro account for years, but I haven't interacted much and hardly ever used the forum.
So first of all, @Jojo-Schmitz, I have the utmost respect and gratitude for your commitment to the MuseScore project and the forum.

Because English is a bit of a struggle for me, I have a general question: Is there only this English-language forum, or is there a separate German one? ...because I've found some German and international topics, but the German main page only directs me to the English forum.

Dankeschön. ;-)

Thank you. ;-)
I knew the storage location; however, the modifications with the old entries have no effect. It is no longer recognized as a separate NumPad (see screenshot), only as a normal numeric keypad.
No surprise to me - so it's only referred to as a “Usb KeyBoard” in the system information.

I doubt that the assignment will work if I enter this exact name, but I may try it later or use a second full keyboard to test whether key commands can be freely assigned there.

Unfortunately, that's true now.
But it was different in MuseScore 3 (I think it was version 3.4.2 that I used before).
Pressing a key on the extra NumPad was interpreted differently than pressing a key on the keyboard's numeric keypad, and could therefore be assigned independently.
The entries in the shortcuts file (see image) were automatically created by the app and ONLY affected the keys on the external device.

It was like this, I swear!
It was quite difficult to order this external numeric keypad because I'd always had problems with data entry—no matter which music notation program I used.
Then I covered the keys (similar to the covers you used to put on ProTools or similar applications, but a) that was too expensive for my tight budget and b) I didn't use it often enough).

This allowed me to select the note lengths with my left hand and enter the names with my right hand or play them on the MIDI keyboard, which felt much more fluid.

For a new project, I decided to use MuseScore 4, which meant buying a new computer after 13 years.
That's why I suspect that it's not the program's fault, but that Apple has changed something in the operating system or the new computer architecture so that the external pad is no longer treated as a separate input source.

This does not invalidate the fact that in the default settings for shortcuts (in the UI), you cannot define two different keys for the same function without editing shortcuts.xml, but the aforementioned would probably no longer work if this function were to return.

I left many keys unchanged, but when I realized that the program makes a difference between these two, I redefined the ones I didn't use – with useful one-finger-gestures such as slurs, triplets, copy & paste, or the right arrow, without having to switch to the large keyboard.
Now I miss that. ;-)
