In the musescore.app directory
If you put MuseScore in /Applications, open a Terminal and type
cd /Applications/MuseScore.app/Contents/Resources/templatesAnd you are in.

OK ... sorry, but I'm not a computer expert ... I have just used terminal for the first time (had never heard of it before) and it would appear that I'm "in" as you say and I have even managed to see the contents of the folder but how do I actually save a score as a template so that I can then use the template another time to create a new score? That folder doesn't seem to be accessible through the "save as" dialog.

If you are not comfortable with terminal try using Finder instead. You may have to save the file somewhere else and copy-paste it using Finder. It will probably ask you for a password when you copy the file to the correct location since it is in the Applications folder.
