Realtime MIDI output (through USB?)

• Feb 4, 2010 - 20:54

The earlier topic on slur-legato prompted me to think a step further. MuseScore can save SMF files - as one of the end-products of one's score-creating efforts. It means, that the graphically created score is 'translated' to MIDI. Not only that, It is applied realtime too, as this is how I can perceive the mechanism of 'play'.

In the beginning there was the Yamaha OPL3, sound module that had a MIDI controlled FM synthesizer, a D/A converter and an audio amplifier - that produced "SOUND" (real, however primitive) computer generated music for the first time. It even had standard MIDI connections. The more adventurous had a facility to get better sounds by connecting the MIDI outputs to better quality MIDI hardware. Since then, thanks to new developments many a MIDI digital hardware dispensed with the cumbersome standard MIDI I/O - and replaced the interface by USB that is capable of hundredfold the relatively slow data traffic necessary for MIDI.

I wonder whether it is planned or envisaged by the development team to produce a realtime MIDI interface output that could be connected to external MIDI devices? That could result in a much lower sound-producing software overhead (to control and provide the data to the relatively poor 'internal sound') and, at the same time, would offer the facility for music production of very high standard. Obviously, the sky would be the limit, after all, Roland, Korg, Yamaha are in fierce competition incoming out wuth better abd better sound cards or black boxes.

Comments

This has already been discussed a lot.
There is no direct midi out for MuseScore.

The only current way is to use jack for windows. I made an attempt some time ago with a cheap midi keyboard and an usb interface. (USB or not does not change anything)
