All text appears only as very small dots (for single words) and dashes (for several words), even though I have the text as 'visible'.

This is a known issue for versions 0.9.5 or earlier for computers that do not have a printer installed.

Two options:

  • Install a generic printer from the control panel (you don't need an actual printer to do this just pick any printer from the list of options), or
  • Try a recent prerelease or nightly instead
