Making changes to measure duration

MuseScore Version 0.9.4- 1290
I've been trying without any success to change a measure (time ) duration from 2/2 to 3/2.
I've done the following - In a new measure, I've marked and right-clicked for measure properties and changed the measure duration to 3/2 and applied. How now do I get the new measure duration number of 3/2 to actually appear on the sheet? How do I get the new duration to appy to the following measures?

Use Create → Time... to add a time signature not found in the standard palette. However there is a regression in the latest prereleases which was only discovered yesterday (see Regression: cannot create time signature ). I would recommend the r1244 prerelease or the stable branch until this is fixed.
The time signature palette works again in r.1300
