Cant play midi files with full General Midi

• Mar 11, 2010 - 22:41

I am using MuseScore 0.9.5 in Linux under the PCLinuxOS distro (Mandriva derivative) I have three different soundfonts (*.sf2 files) on this machine. I can >Preferences>IO>and select any of them, and I still have only the piano sounds on all instruments. Yes I have restarted MuseScore, I have even rebooted, and disabled timidity which was set to start on boot. At one time I had rosegarden using these soundfonts, then something broke. Rosegarden seems to work now, just won't play sounds.

Have I missed something obvious?

When I open the mixer, it see the names of the instruments supposed to be playing, but it's all piano. Changing one to another instrument does nothing -- it's still piano. I haven't tried creating a new file yet. I'll try that tomorrow. But I have a boatload of midi files already, they play just fine under timidity, and rosegarden(before it broke) .

Just tried this again, after the machine was shut down for a couple of days. I'm now hearing different instruments, albeit somewhat out of tune with the Unison sound font. I think I had this problem once before under windows a long time ago.

Stand by while I look further into this. It may have been a combination of things--improper setup, bad soundfont, bad midi file, or maybe just my head in a dark place.
