Lots of static in sound

• Mar 14, 2015 - 01:55

When the volume for any instrument is all the way up and I play back the music, the sound is very distorted and staticky (if that's a word). My reverb is all the way down and so is the chorus. The static sounds were non-existent in beta 1, but starting with beta 2, there is too much static in the sound.

What settings can I change to keep the volume all the way up while getting rid of the static? Right now I have to turn down the volume to about half to get rid of the static, and then I can't hear quieter parts of the music. But even then, there is still a lot of static especially in loud sections.

All this static is making it hard to like the new playback features. Is there a solution for this besides using an older version?

I am running MuseScore 2.0 RC 32-bit Windows 7. Any help would be appreciated.

Where are you turning up the volume?

On the synthesiser page?

In the Windows mixer?

Where?

Sound levels are much higher in MuseScore 2 RC than they were in 1.3, and it is possible to raise the sound level to the point of overloading the local sound system, which is what you are experiencing.

If you are hearing distortion simply turn the volume down till it disappears.

I hear the static when I turn up the volume on the synthesizer page. Turning up the volume in the Windows mixer does not create the static; it only makes the sound louder the way it's supposed to (no static). That shows me there's either a problem with MuseScore's playback in loud volumes or there's an issue with the SoundFont that I am using (pianissimum; I like the piano sound in that soundfont).

Just been checking your soundfont.

As I said volumes have been increased in MuseScore 2 so that overly quiet soundfonts can be heard.

Unfortunately this also means that loud soundfonts can overload the system which is the case in the Pianissimum soundfont.

As I said before - if you are experiencing distortion simply turn down the volume in synthesiser - that is what the control is there for.

Maybe in a future release of MuseScore we need to think of providing volume controls on a per soundfont basis as well as the overall master control?
