I'm wondering if there is a way to create parts for your score (e.g., piano violin) and then make changes to the parts (not the entire score with all the parts) and then make changes to a part without changing all the other parts. I want to work on one part independent of the others.

Changing a part does not normally affect other parts, unless you are adding or deleting measures. In which case, it *has* to affect the other parts - otherwise, the music won't be in sync any more and the musicians playing from these parts would be in different places at the same time. Or am I misunderstanding what you are asking? If so, can you post the score you are having problems with and describe exactly what you are trying to do?
You can create the part in File > Part. Then switch to the part by selecting the right tab. Go to File > Save as and save the part in its own MSCZ file. Open this MSCZ file and edit as much as you want, it's now an independent file / part.
