Can't add bar lines

• May 31, 2010 - 23:39

I cannot add bar lines to the beginnings of staffs. They won't drag-and-drop nor will they double-click. I'm using Windows XP 32-bit.

Here's the scenario: I'm writing out a series of exercises. Each exercise is eight bars long and is stretched over two staffs of four measures each. I want a treble clef to appear at the beginning of the first four-bar staff, and I want a bar line to appear at the beginning of the next four-bar staff. That approach provides a good visual separation between the exercises.

While I haven't been able to delete the treble clefs every other line, I can make them invisible as a workaround. Now I just need to figure out a way to add the bar lines. I've tried everything, but so far nothing has worked.

I should mention that I created my document in MS 0.9.5. A little while ago, I downloaded the new 0.9.6 version on my laptop and tried editing my music file using it. I was able to add barlines where I want them using the new version, but it totally screws up the formatting of my document to the point where solving one problem creates a new, even less acceptable problem. So I'm going to have to find my solution, if there is one, using version 0.9.5.

Any advice?

Standard music notation does not have bar lines at the beginning of a single staff. If you decide you want them anyway, go to Style > Edit General Style > Bar lines and add a check mark to "Bar lines at start of single staff."

Could you describe and show what you mean by "totally screws up the formatting of my document".

Have you read New features in MuseScore 0.9.6 , "Important information for people upgrading from older versions"?
